What VarioRIP does

VarioRIP is PrintCloud's variable-data printing solution: design one template, merge it with your data, and produce thousands of personalized documents in a single run. Import recipient data from Excel, CSV, XML, or JSON, or connect directly to your database via ODBC — no export required. Place variable text, images, and barcodes on a layered template, and preview any record live — including print-accurate soft proofs with spot colours. Computed fields, lookups, and per-record scripts handle everything from simple mail merge to fully conditional page content — including live database lookups mid-composition — and built-in preflight checks catch low-resolution images, missing fonts, and excessive ink coverage before a single sheet is printed.

When it's time to produce, VarioRIP scales from a single desktop to the pressroom. Both variants share the same output engine: PDF, press-ready PDF/VT, native HP PCL, and contone or halftone TIFF streams, with compressed delta encoding on both contone and halftone data to cut transfer size. The difference between the two is scale, not output quality — VarioRIP Flow drives a single printer from one workstation, while VarioRIP Press manages multiple printers at once and adds direct integration with finishing equipment such as the Quadient MACH9DS inserter. Either way, the engine is built for speed — output starts streaming while your job is still composing.

VarioRIP Variants

VarioRIP Flow (early access)

VarioRIP Flow is built for the typical end user — one printer, one RIP, one workstation. Design your template, merge your data, and send finished jobs straight to your printer, all from a single desktop install. Flow already runs the full output engine: PDF, press-ready PDF/VT, native HP PCL, and contone or halftone TIFF streams with compressed delta encoding — just scoped to a single printer.

VarioRIP Press (coming soon)

VarioRIP Press scales the same output engine into the pressroom: multiple printers per installation and direct integration with finishing equipment such as the Quadient MACH9DS inserter. The main difference from Flow isn't output quality — it's scale and industrial integration.

Themed to fit your bench

Your proofs don't care about your theme. VarioRIP themes restyle the application around your artwork — never the artwork itself. What you see on the canvas is what prints, in every theme, at every text size.

VarioRIP editor shown in the Dark theme

Dark default

The default look — easy on the eyes in dim rooms.

VarioRIP editor shown in the Light theme

Light

A clean, modern light theme.

VarioRIP editor shown in the Classic theme

Classic

Traditional desktop gray, familiar to operators from legacy RIP tools.

VarioRIP editor shown in the High Contrast theme

High Contrast

Near-black surfaces, near-white text, built for harsh floor lighting.

VarioRIP editor shown in the Comfort theme

Comfort

Larger type and roomier controls out of the box, for long sessions.

Switch themes and text size (Normal / Large / Extra Large) instantly from the View menu — no reload, and it's remembered next time you open VarioRIP. Light, Classic, High Contrast, and Comfort all meet WCAG AA text contrast; High Contrast targets AAA.

  • Computed fields, lookups, and generated fields (counters, dates, record numbers)
  • Per-record scripting for fully conditional, personalized output — including live database lookups mid-composition, no export needed

Check & proof

  • Print-accurate soft proofs with spot colour simulation
  • Preflight checks: image resolution, font embedding, ink coverage
  • Full Unicode text shaping, including CJK vertical writing, Arabic, and Cyrillic
  • Five UI themes — dark, light, classic, high-contrast, and comfort — plus adjustable text size, switchable instantly from the View menu

Print & finish

  • PDF, press-ready PDF/VT, native HP PCL, and contone/halftone TIFF output — on both Flow and Press
  • Compressed delta encoding for contone and halftone streams, keeping transfers lean

See it in action

A look at the real workflow, from template design to final output.

Template editor

Layer-based template design with variable text, images, and barcodes — preview any record live while you work. Click through for the toolbar and tool palette close-up, then the full editor.

Data merge

Import Excel, CSV, XML, or JSON; map fields automatically; add computed fields, lookups, and counters.

Production checks

Preflight every job for image resolution, font embedding, and ink coverage before it reaches the press.

Output & proofing

Print-accurate soft proofs with spot colour simulation, then produce PDF, PDF/VT, native HP PCL, or contone/halftone TIFF — with compressed delta encoding to keep streams lean.

On the roadmap

  • Automated delivery to S3, SFTP, and webhook destinations
  • Point-and-click database (ODBC) source picker in the editor UI
  • InDesign (IDML) import
  • macOS and Linux direct-to-printer support for VarioRIP Flow
